Accountability

accountabilityIt is said that we are all accountable to something or someone. Rather it is forced accountability or self imposed accountability. We are indeed accountable to something. Most people however only tend to worry about themselves and do not even hold themselves accountable for the things they do. They would much rather point the finger at someone else than take their share of the blame on something.

In the military and in business in general the old adage “s&^t rolls down hill” is true in so many ways. The boss may not always be right , but the boss is always the boss certainly fits here also. The easiest way to deflect blame is by blaming someone else and not holding ourselves responsible for how things turn out in our lives. For instance we can blame our parents for not getting us out of the hood, or we can blame the teachers for not pushing us harder, or we can blame our kids for not trying harder, and on and on, and on.

The truth is we are accountable we are the ones who have to live up to our own standards, and do what we say we are going to do. At least in the western world their are no dictators making you do something that you don’t want to do. There is no one making you do anything you don’t want to do. There is only you and your choices. If you don’t like the job you have then you can quit. You don’t like the spouse you have then you can get a divorce. There is nothing sort of death or sickness that can stop you from doing what you want.

So you have no excuse to blame someone else for not doing something when you are the only one who can control what you do. You are indeed accountable to someone or something. Growing up our parents try to tell us the right from the wrong and allow us an opportunity to test the bounds every now and then. If done right we will have the sense to respect some authority mainly our parents who have already made all the mistakes they are trying to help us avoid.

Really it comes down to you as far as what you hold yourself accountable for. If you are a person of your word and you don’t want to disappoint people then that is you holding yourself accountable. If you are a person who really does not care about how others feel then that is your reality and you may believe that you are accountable as well.

Your definition of accountability is going to be your definition. What you do with your life and whom you share it with is also up to you. Your reputation as an accountable person will help you gain many things in life, like friendships, opportunities, and self-worth.

So who or what are you accountable to?
